![]() ![]() The best way is to take the Calmac ferry from Kennacraig to Islay (there are several sailings each day, Cannot post the link, but google Calmac for info), and then the Feolin ferry at Port Askaig (you have to buy the tickets as you cross, go for an open return as you will be staying the night). ![]() Hi DLM, I am not sure if this question is still open, since you said you'd be in Scotland this month (surprised nobody has answered for almost a year), but I will send you a quick answer anyhow. Disaster was averted with lots of help and TLC from the Hotel, and we crossed instead on the fast passenger ferry from Tayvallich direct to Jura, which worked out very well, as the timings were better, and it was easy to visit Islay using the bus and Feolin Ferry from Jura.… We travelled as a group of seven (from Liverpool) and found out the day before we travelled that our car ferry (Kennacraig to Port Askaig) was cancelled. You will need to book and pre-order as there is only so much available, understandably, as there are 11 bedrooms in the hotel on a remote island of only 200 souls. ![]() Our vegetarians felt well catered for, and my Indian friends very much enjoyed the chicken curry. The food was excellent throughout while the regular menu is short, there are a lot of daily specials, which during our stay included venison, beef fillet, langoustine, scallops, lobster and vegan pizza. Officially 3 star-rated, the rooms are simple, as you might expect of an old coaching inn, but comfortable and spotless. The Jura Hotel is tremendous, as are the people looking after you there. Great staff, good food ( the home made yogurt with fruit coulis for breakfast is excellent!), excellent Covid procedures, nice rooms, comfy beds. The situation is ideal right on Small Isles Bay. I hope the hotel will become busier as the months go on as it didn't seem to he buzzing apart from workmen who were staying there. They all were useful and apart from the Ardnahoe distillery not being able to provide us with a table for lunch. The 'manager' or person who I took to he manager was really pleasant and helpful and gave me loads of tips for when I returned to Islay prior to our ferry. Talking of staff, there did seem to be a plentiful supply of staff who were all pleasant and helpful. Ok it was a little pricey but for a hotel miles away from anywhere they did a good job getting they food they did and the staff. We wanted good, wholesome food at a reasonable price. Food was good but, ok, not gourmet standard but gourmet standard was not what we wanted. The web site mentioned TV in the residents lounge but we didn't see that. There are no t.v.'s in the room but that didn't worry us. I asked for some de caff coffee and tea for the room and was given a generous supply plus some ground coffee and cafetiere. Bearing in mind the location of the hotel and the palaver they have had to suffer over the last 18 months I cannot complain at all. The bathroom was modern with bath and shower although the vinyl covering to the bath panel was starting to peel. The bedding was clean, towels clean, great views from the room and plenty of circulation space. The room was nicely furnished although not 'cosy' but certainly adequate for what we wanted. ![]() On arrival at the Jura Hotel after finding a place to park right outside, the friendly 'manger' welcomed us and offered to carry our cases to the room.
